History 2: History of the American Frontier, 1607 - 1900

Welcome to History 2!  The topics covered in History 2 change from semester to semester.  This spring, History 2 will examine the American frontier from its beginning on the Virginia coast in 1607 until 1900, when the United States Census Bureau declared that there were no frontier regions left in the United States. Please see the course description below for more information on the class. 

This will be a fun class, so if you have not done it already, you must register for the class at the College of the Siskiyous Admissions and Records Office.


Course Description:

American Frontier History: The course examines the frontier from 1607 through 1900 and how it shaped the United States.  Colonial settlements, the Trans-Appalachian West, Manifest Destiny, and Native American relations will be discussed along with a significant examination of the myths and realities of the Old West.  During all these periods, the role of the common person (including women and minorities) will be highlighted. 


First Day of Semester is First Day of Class:

Class assignments begin on the first day of the semester, so make sure you access the ETUDES-NG class website on the first day of the semester for instructions on how to get started.

Books: (Make sure you buy the correct volume and edition of each book.)

Required reading: Westward Expansion: A History of the American Frontier.  Ray Allen Billington and Martin Ridge.  Sixth Edition, An Abridgment.  University of New Mexico Press.  ($26.95 new paperback).

Required reading: The Legacy of Conquest: The Unbroken Past of the American West.  Patricia Nelson Limerick.  First Edition.  W.W. Norton.  ($16.95 new paperback).

Recommended reading: English Simplified (most recent addition), Blanche Ellsworth and others.

You are responsible for having the books in time to participate in the class.  If the college book store is out of stock, you will need to purchase the books elsewhere.  If the book store is out of stock, that is not an excuse to not turn in work.

Instructions for Accessing the Online Class:

This class uses the ETUDES-NG system.  If you are unfamiliar with ETUDES-NG, I recommend you work though the free online orientation to the system.  If you go the College of the Siskiyous Etudes - Student Help webpage, you will find links to several ETUDES-NG demonstrations.  ETUDES-NG is different than ETUDES-Classic.  Even if you have used ETUDES-Classic, I strongly recommend you watch all the ETUDES-NG demos.
