Welcome to History 17A: Early US History!  I'm glad you have decided to take this class.

If you have not done it already, you must register for the class at the College of the Siskiyous Admissions and Records Office.

Course Description:

Survey of American history, development of the United States and its political, economic, social, and cultural institutions from colonial times through the era of reconstructions.

First Day of Semester is First Day of Class:

Class assignments begin on the first day of the semester, so make sure you access the ETUDES-NG class website on the first day of the semester for instructions on how to get started.

Syllabus

Class Schedule

Books: (Make sure you buy the correct volume and edition of each book.)

Required reading: Nation of Nations: A Narrative History of the American Republic, Volume I: To 1877, Fifth Edition by Davidson, Gienapp, and others, McGraw-Hill, Fifth Edition, 0-07-287099-0.

Caution: A new edition of the textbook, Nation of Nations, is now being published.  This class is not using the new edition.  Since all reading assignments, quizzes, and tests are based on the fifth edition, that is the edition you need to buy.  Even if the college's book store is selling the new edition, you still need to buy the fifth edition.  Please see the syllabus for more information on the book - including its ISBN.

Required reading: The Way We Lived, Volume I: 1492-1877, Fifth Edition, by Binder, Frederick, Houghton Mifflin, Fifth Edition, 0-618-30585-8 .

Recommended reading: English Simplified (most recent addition), Blanche Ellsworth and others.

You are responsible for having the books in time to participate in the class.  If the college book store is out of stock, you will need to purchase the books elsewhere.  If the book store is out of stock, that is not an excuse to not turn in work.

Taking an Online Class

If this is your first online class, I suggest you read over this helpful COS webpage: Online Survival Guide.

Instructions for Accessing the Online Class:

This class uses the ETUDES-NG system.  If you are unfamiliar with ETUDES-NG, I recommend you work though the free online orientation to the system.  If you go the College of the Siskiyous Etudes - Student Help webpage, you will find links to several ETUDES-NG demonstrations.  ETUDES-NG is different than ETUDES-Classic.  Even if you have used ETUDES-Classic, I strongly recommend you watch all the ETUDES-NG demos.

To learn how to login to the class, go the College of the Siskiyous Etudes - Student Help webpage, and read the Login Instructions.

See you inside the class!
